Canadian Bakin has one of those stories that could only come out of Huntsville. A desk jockey gets tired of the grind out on the Arsenal and decides to tackle a side hustle.
Some things like that turn into weekend projects in a garage, but this one turned into a full time gig with a bakery. And this story ends with some of the best damn bread in town.
Just a short walk from the downtown area is the cute little bagel place with just a little bit of an attitude. Apart from the amazing couple that runs the place, there’s a bit of a cutesy old town feel in the interior, with everything from local callouts to an old TV.
Of course, that’s not what you come to the place for. And while I do enjoy the service and friendship, the stuff they have to eat at Canadian Bakin is really the story here.
Stopping in last week, I tried a sampling of two things that caught my eye. The French Toast on special, and the BLT Bagel that was suggested to me.
The French Toast should pretty much qualify as a desert, given how amazingly sweet the thing is. It’s almost like getting a slice of some sort of lovingly baked cake at your grandma’s house after dinner. The only thing wrong with it was that I dumbly ate a bite of it first, when I should have saved the whole thing for last.
The BLT Bagel is pretty simple to describe, it’s probably the best thing I’ve eaten in months. The giant slab of bacon would probably be more accurately described as a miniature steak. The B overpowers the L & T to great effect, and on top of a bagel with everything else on it, there’s simply nothing to compare it to.
At just around seven dollars each, these things are an absolute steal as well. The BLT Bagel is something that I wouldn’t hesitate to get if it were $15 at a fancy overpriced restaurant. The French Toast could easily qualify as some gourmet desert at this fancy place as well.
It’s easy to look at Canadian Bakin and think of it as a place to get bread, bagels, and other bakery items. It it, but it’s much more than that too. It’s awesome for everything they can do with those bread and bagels. I’d never have thought that a BLT would be the best thing I’ve put in my mouth in 2021, but here we are.
