Starting with the release of Alita: Battle Angel at the beginning of this year, 2019 is amping up to be a year full of highly anticipated geeky movies. There are 17 other movies set to be released that could tickle any nerd’s fancy.

From sci-fi to superheroes and certain famous animated creatures, this is one list you don’t want to miss. We’re previewing the upcoming movie releases with local filmmaker Benjamin Stark Films hby predicting their Rotten Tomatoes scores.

March 8: Captain Marvel

As one of the most anticipated Marvel movies of the year, will it live up to the hype? With Goose as a cast member, it is very likely.

RT Prediction –  Stark: 86% GOH: 75%

March 15: Captive State

With themes similar to District 9, this movie explores life during alien occupation. If this movie is anything like District 9, it could be an amazing one to see.

RT Prediction – Stark: 82% GOH: 90%

April 5: Shazam!

I predict this goofy movie could be a sleeper hit, and with Zachary Levi as Shazam, the classic superhero trope could be turned on its head.

RT Prediction – Stark: 60% GOH: 65%

April 12: Hellboy

The R-rated reboot by director Neil Marshall has Hellboy fans anticipating a badass new look for the superhero.

RT Prediction – Stark: 27% GOH: 55%

April 26: Avengers: Endgame

Will there be life after Infinity War? The anticipation over the future of our beloved characters is almost too intense.

RT Prediction – Stark: 89% GOH: 90%

May 10: Pokemon Detective Pikachu

Pokemon fans are quaking for the release of this movie, where Ryan Reynolds voices the sassy electric mouse on a quest through Ryme City.

RT Prediction – Stark: 37% GOH: 60%

May 24: Brightburn

Can a new genre-superhero horror-be successfully solidified with this movie? I’m not sure, but I don’t think a combination of The Omen and Man of Steel has ever been done before.

RT Prediction – Stark: 52% GOH: 60%

May 31: Godzilla: King of the Monsters

It has been a long five years waiting for the sequel of 2014’s movie. With Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah joining the mix, epic monster fights are a guarantee.

RT Prediction – Stark: 80% GOH: 75%

June 7: Dark Phoenix

Jean Grey develops powers that corrupt her, and the rest of the X-Men have to make a difficult decision. The “young X-Men” movies have been neat so far, but they might have run their course.

RT Prediction – Stark: 54% GOH: 40%

June 14: Men in Black: International

They’re back to defend Earth from interplanetary scum. I’m a fan of the movie’s new male-female duo, but will this movie be a worthy addition to the franchise?

RT Prediction – Stark: 25% GOH: 20%

July 5: Spider-Man: Far From Home

The second movie in the Spider-Man reboot features a new villain, Mysterio. With the enormous success of Spider-Man: Homecoming, will this movie meet expectations?

RT Prediction – Stark: 87% GOH: 65%

August 2: The New Mutants

It’s more superhero horror as mutants with newly discovered powers try to escape captivity. The buzz around this movie hasn’t been great, but I’m guessing fans of Brightburn might also want to check this out.

RT Prediction – Stark: 73% GOH: 49%

October 4: Joker

Joaquin Phoenix is just eccentric enough to make a movie about Batman’s most popular adversary and his origin story work. But will the fans agree?

RT Prediction – Stark: 44% GOH: 60%

October 4: Gemini Man

Will Smith stars in a new sci-fi thriller directed by Ang Lee. Hopefully this will be better than the last few sci-fi movies he has been in, but I don’t think it will knock anyone’s socks off.

RT Prediction – Stark: 58% GOH: 45%

October 11: Zombieland 2: Double Tap

The original cast is back together again to battle evolved zombies, deal with survivors and maybe see Bill Murray again.

RT Prediction – Stark: 66% GOH: 40%

November 8: Sonic the Hedgehog

Our favorite blue hedgehog evades government capture with the help of a cop in this live action movie. It’s a safe bet, but not an overly exciting one.

RT Prediction – Stark: 20% GOH: 25%

December 20: Star Wars: Episode IX

The end of the newest Star Wars trilogy is finally here! As one of the most anticipated geeky movies of the year, I am itching to find out what happens with Rey and the gang.
